Texas City 1997 State Football Champions

1997 Texas City Stingarees State Championship team

The 1997 Texas City Stingarees were the first Texas City football team to win a state title. That year, the Stingarees, also known as the "Men In Black," were given a top seeding — #2 overall in Class 4A — by the state and local press. Captains Everick Rawls (LB), Matt Gorom (FB), and Jermaine Anderson (DE/TE) and senior quarterback Ervis Hill were leaders on a team coached by Rusty Dowling (Stingaree, 1998).

The opening game of the season was the Stings' only loss that year. The team won the District 23-4A title and was subsequently seeded into the Division 1 playoff bracket. The Stingarees played the state championship game against the Corsicana Tigers, with senior backup QB Adrian Acosta making the winning touchdown (Clarion).

The following spring, eight graduating seniors signed letters of intent to further their football careers in college, including a record four players — Jermaine Anderson, Tyrone Jones, Ervis Hill and Everick Rawls — who elected to play together at the University of Texas.
